Spectres of the Last War
The Church of the Silver Flame started in 299 YK, making it a relatively young religion. A young paladin of Dol Arrah named Tira Miron went forth to slay a great and terrible demon who had loosed Khyber’s grip upon it. Unable to slay it, Tira Miron sacrificed herself to bind the demon, becoming one with a force called the Silver Flame to do so. After her sacrifice, the Silver Flame was able to communicate through Tira Miron to mortals, and the church was born. The Purified, as worshippers call themselves, are dedicated to destroying evil, particularly supernatural evil, wherever it may be found. This mission does not always have the intended results, however.
While lycanthropes (werewolves, werebears, wererats, etc.) have always been able to spread their curse to others, around 800 YK the power of that curse expanded exponentially. Where once only true-born lycanthropes could inflict their condition upon others, now the inflicted could do the same. The Church, being dedicated to eradicating supernatural evil, launched a crusade against all lycanthropes, good and evil. Many innocents were put to death during their fervor, especially among the shifter population of the Eldeen Reaches. The Church was successful in ending the lycanthrope threat, but their methods in doing so are still a source of shame for most of the Purified.
The Church is strongest in Thrane, where Tira Miron made her sacrifice, and through the course of the Last War Thrane became a theocracy ruled by the church. The Keeper of the Flame, chosen by it to be its voice to the world, is currently a 12-year-old girl.
